2025 RN Nursing Student Placement Program Availability 

Griffith University, Southern Cross University and the Gold Coast Primary Health Network (GCPHN) Clinical Placements team warmly extends this invitation to you and welcomes your participation and availability in the 2025 Undergraduate Student Nursing and Midwifery Program. 

We look forward to having you on board the program where your skills and expertise in General Practice will enlighten our nursing students.


PLEASE SUBMIT THIS FORM NO LATER THAN FRIDAY 1ST NOVEMBER 2024

This will enable us to provide you with an opportunity to be allocated students for the first group of students in 2025 if you have provided your availability for these blocks.  We accept and encourage you to submit availability at any time throughout the year should you be in a position to host nursing students.  

The table below provides a snapshot of the 2025 nursing student placement schedule to help you in assessing your availability that can be selected further on in the form.

Practice Details

Practice Student Placement Capacity

Please indicate below if you wish to host one student at a time or are able to host two students at a time.  Note:  There are instances where blocks cross over but you may be able to host two students a a time if you have two RNs or more hosting students in your practice.

Please select from below the number of hours you are able to host students on placement and the days that the RN is in practice.

RN Preceptor Information

Hosting Students

The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia guidelines require nursing students to have direct supervision by a Registered Nurse.   The supervision of students can be shared between practice nurses.

  • The RN must have a minimum 12 months clinical experience 

  • RNs must hold current, full, unrestricted registration with AHPRA and advise us should this situation change            

  • Students are NOT permitted to undertake their placement with a family member or partner, in a facility where a family member or partner is employed, or in a facility where the student is employed

  • In addition, they are NOT permitted to undertake their placement at a Practice/with a GP if they, their partner or any member of their family are a patient of that Practice or GP

  • Placements are currently on a full-time capacity - e.g. 38 + hours per week, including public holidays, weekends and evening shifts.  Note:  If the practice has potential to host students on a part time basis please advise also. 

  • Block duration varies between 2 to 4 weeks







RN PRECEPTOR AVAILABLITY SELECTION

When selecting your student hosting preferences, please refer to the top of this form where we have provided an overview of the placement year including cohort years, blocks and dates.  If you select all blocks and cohorts, we will review your selections and allocate students to ensure there are no cross over of blocks in any one period if you are hosting one student at a time.

SOUTHERN CROSS UNIVERSITY - YEAR 1 MASTERS

UNIT: NURS5015 (3 week block) Community Partnerships

Key Learning Objectives:

  • Articulate an advanced and integrated understanding of partnership models of care for nursing with particular reference to working with vulnerable populations.

  • Critically appraise the impact primary health care principles have on health outcomes locally, nationally, and internationally.

  • Apply complex concepts of communication and cultural safety that contribute to impactful partnerships, particularly with vulnerable populations and those living in areas of rural and remote Australia.

  • Critically reflect on digital modes of nursing practice in addressing global health needs.

SOUTHERN CROSS UNIVERSITY - YEAR 2

UNIT:  NURS2018 (3 week block) Building Healthy Communities 

Key Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the partnership models of care for nursing with a particular reference to working with vulnerable populations.

  • Appraise the impact primary health care principles have on health outcomes locally, national and internationally.

  • Develop communication and cultural safety skills that contribute to impactful partnerships, particularly with vulnerable populations and those living in areas of rural and remote Australia.

  • Explore global health through digital modes of nursing practice.

GRIFFITH UNIVERSITY - YEAR 2

UNIT: 2807NRS (2 week block) Chronic Condition Management 

Key Learning Objectives:  

People are admitted to hospital for sudden, acute illnesses, injuries and conditions. In professional practice, Registered Nurses need knowledge and skills to critically analyse the care requirements for the person experiencing an acute alteration in health status. In this course, students integrate the principles of pathophysiology, pharmacology, and evidence-based nursing to develop theoretical knowledge and practical skills so they can competently provide safe nursing care for individuals who are experiencing medical/surgical health conditions. Students undertake 160 hours of professional experience placement (clinical practice) to develop and demonstrate nursing competence in clinical settings congruent with a second-year undergraduate student level.

Four weeks of professional experience, which offers the opportunity to develop and demonstrate nursing competence in clinical settings congruent with a second-year undergraduate student level.

GRIFFITH UNIVERSITY - YEAR 3

3804NRS (2 week block) Community Nursing Practice

Key Learning Objectives: 

The aim of this course is for students to explore conceptual knowledge and nursing practice skills required to work with individuals, families, groups and populations in a community setting. Core concepts include health promotion, primary health care, community, epidemiology, social determinants of health, community development, agency and empowerment, primary care, continuity of care, health teaching, health literacy, cultural safety, safe practice in the community, and community practice. This is a core third year clinical course in the Bachelor of Nursing, which builds upon pre-requisite course knowledge and experience from 2807NRS Chronic Illness Management and 2809NRS Mental Health Nursing Practice. The content and knowledge will support student learning in 3807NRS Clinical Decision Making in the final trimester of study.


Students undertake two weeks of professional experience, which offers the opportunity to develop and demonstrate nursing competence in clinical settings congruent with a third-year undergraduate student level.


3808NRS (4 week block) Professional Experience Capstone 

Key Learning Objectives: 

3808NRS is designated as a capstone course. This course draws together theoretical and clinical concepts related to legal and ethical responsibilities, quality and safety measures and decision-making based on knowledge and evidence, in the direct care of individuals and families. This course enables the development of critical thinking and analysis through evidence-based practice. The student will integrate previously acquired knowledge and skills in assessment, decision-making and team communication to enable the delivery of safe, effective and collaborative care to individuals and their families, in a variety of settings.

Students undertake two by four weeks (8 weeks in total) of professional experience, which offers the opportunity to develop and demonstrate nursing competence in clinical settings congruent with a third-year undergraduate student level.

Following completion of this form you will receive an email from our team confirming receipt of your submission.  As indicated in the attached timeline, should you be allocated a student you will receive notification and practice documentation three weeks prior to the block commencing. 

If at any time your availability changes please let us know so that we can make these adjustments to the schedule and your availability. 

Next Steps:   the GCPHN will be in touch prior to 2025 placements commencing to confirm practice bank details  via EFTsure. Please ensure you follow the steps to provide or update bank details to ensure payment is made to the correct account.
